Building an Email List Following

Another great question came in regarding building your email list. I’ve mentioned this many times before including in last week’s article about building a steady and reliable income from your online business, as the email list is key to that.

“My biggest problem is creating a following… building an email list and turning that into paying customers. I would bet that is almost everyone’s problem.”

Building an email list is still the best way to continually market an online business. This article explains how to do it.

Building an email list is still the best way to continually market an online business. This article explains how to do it.

In order to build an email list you need to have two things.

1) Optin Offer
2) Traffic

And of course these can be broken down into many parts. Let’s start with the first one.

Optin Offer

An optin offer can come in many forms. The idea is you want people to sign up to your email list. In order for them to do that you’re going to need to offer them something in exchange. In the early days of the internet you could simply offer your email newsletter and people would subscribe as getting email was a novelty. Remember AOL’s “You’ve Got Mail” phrase. How annoying would that be today?

What you offer can vary wildly. The basic idea is you want to offer something so good that people have to get it. Not only should your offer be compelling, but whatever your offer should be quality stuff.

If you have a great squeeze page but when they get your download or whatever it is and its crap they’re not likely to stick around or become customers. But if you have something great that helps the person immediately than they’re likely to think “If they’re giving this away for free, how awesome is what they’re selling going to be?”

As for where this offer is it can be in many places.

  • Squeeze page
  • Blog sidebar
  • Popups
  • Exit Pops
  • Etc.

The squeeze page is generally going to convert best because it is designed to give a person two options. Signup or leave. With more options people get distracted and do other things.

Of course, what you use will depend on your business and how your funnels and marketing works. Depending on these factors you may be using all of these optins on different pages and websites.

Notice to the right on the sidebar here on LoganChristopher.com that there is an optin offer for not one but five free reports. If you’ve read these you know they’re short but have great information in them that you can put into use right away. (Hint: since people can’t tell the quality of your information from the outside, quantity can take its place, plus it allows you to have more hooks, any one of which may interest a prospect.)

Your offer can be tested and tweaked to get better responses. For instance over at SuperManHerbs.com I ran a split test to see what worked better, a 15% off coupon which was our control, or a Free Report about herbalism. All that was changed was the wording on the optin box and in fact people got both after they signed up. The coupon won by almost a 2 to 1 margin.

Start with whatever you can. Something that I tell my coaching clients is to create your optin offer as if it is a paid product. Make it that good and you’re likely to get some great fans on your email list and then turning these into paying customers shouldn’t be too hard.

Of course there is much more to this topic but this is enough to get started with.

And here’s the key the best optin offer won’t work if no one is going to it. Thus you need to move onto the second part of the equation.

There are lots of ways to get traffic to your website. In the beginning I suggest you pick one to start with and work on that until it works. Some are better than others and they all have different benefits and drawbacks to them.

The problem many people seem to have is they think people are just going to show up in droves to their website just by putting it up. It doesn’t work that way! You have to GET people to come to your website.

As a basic breakdown we can split traffic into paid and non-paid means. Here is a partial list of different ways to get the traffic coming to your site.

  • Google PPC
  • Facebook PPC
  • Direct Ad Buys
  • Affiliates*

*While affiliates are paid the best part is you typically only pay after they make a sale, so you’re only paying out of profits that come in, rather than up front. Getting high-quality affiliates is often the quickest route to success if you do it right.

  • SEO
  • Youtube
  • Forums
  • Social Media
  • Guest Articles
  • Word of Mouth

Lots of people flock to the non-paid methods because you put no money on the line. (That’s not exactly true because you can pay for these services as well like hiring an SEO company to build your rankings, but it can be done for free, by investing in your time.) But the truth is these are a lot slower to work and you have less control in many ways than with paid advertising.

Remember to pick ONE and learn all you can about it and take action DOING it until it works. What will work best for you will depend on your market, what you like to do and the online business model you’re doing.

And if you do this right you will get regular streams of traffic which will convert into optins which will convert into customers. Its quite simple in theory but can be tough in execution as there are many steps along the way where you can screw it up.

Of course once you have the email list and customers there is much you can do from there but that’s a topic for another time.

How to Build a Steady and Reliable Online Income

I got some great questions that came in after my latest article. Thanks to Jon Haas of www.WarriorFitness.org for sending this one in.

“How do you get to the point where the stream of income is steady and reliable? For instance, I have had my online business going for over 2 years now, yet my monthly income has never exceeded $500 per month. Usually it is much less. I have several products of my own that I sell as well as being an affiliate for you, Bud, and Eric. The really frustrating thing is that last month I sold 2-3 ebooks per day and had my best month ever and this month I have not sold 1 damn thing. Any help would be hugely appreciated!!!”

I understand your frustration. This is something I battled with early on myself.

income going up

There can be a time when you have a breakthru month and you think it will always continue like that, then the next month you may make half of what you did before, or even less.

I remember with my first product launch I brought in about $1200 in that first month. This was a lot of money to me at the time and I was very happy with it. A couple months later I only sold two or three copies of it and made less than $200. This wasn’t enough to even cover my expenses.

Since then I’ve learned many things to grow my income in a consistent manner.

Steady and Reliable Income

The first question to ask yourself is what is steady and reliable? What would you like to earn in this manner?

When I set business and income goals I like to look at a few different things.

Gross Income

This is the big number and the one I have focused on the most in the past. I’m still seeking to bring this one up and I will always have a goal for it. The problem is just like was mentioned, if you have one great month, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll do the same thing or even close to it the next time.

Net Income

This is actually the more important number yet until recently I didn’t give it much thought. If you made $50000 in one month you’d probably think that was great. But what if you spent $60000 to make it? That would be a negative cash flow and a bad situation. If you expenses continue to grow when your income does you will not be building true wealth, thus looking at net income, or profit, is very useful.

Automatic or Auto-Pilot Income

Most of my income coming in is from new promotions. This means a new product launch or a special promo with an affiliate. These are great as they can bring in lots of income. But it is different from auto-pilot income.

When you create a product you’ve created an asset that should continue to bring in money month after month. But how steady and reliable this is will depend on a number of factors.

Are there ways to make sure that income is coming in regularly every month? Yes there are and we’ll get back to this topic in a moment. For now let’s talk about offers.

Offers, the Key to Income

If you want to increase your income the key is to make more offers. When you offer something the person you’re offering it to can say one of two things. Yes or no. Yes means cash in your pocket. If they say no then you get nothing.

But if you don’t make an offer what will the other person say? Nothing. It’s an automatic NO!

Thus is you want to increase your income you need to make more offers.

What is an offer? It can be anything but there are some things that make it work better.

Just having a sales letter on your website doesn’t mean anyone is going to it. What is the best way to control traffic, where they go, what they see, and thus what they can buy?

The Mighty Email List

Are you growing your email list? This is still the best way to make offers (except perhaps direct mail, but that requires more resources to do).

As your email list grows you should realize this means you have more people you can make more offers to.

A friend of mine who started his online business less than a year ago has rocket launched himself upwards. How did he do it? There was a whole lot that went into it, but one of the main things is he emails out every single day and there is an offer in almost all of those emails.

What that means is a fairly reliable income from doing lots of work. His email list has grown. His customer list has grown. And with it his income has grown.

There will be some correlation with the size of your email list and your income. These can be very different numbers for different people. A good email list of 5000 can easily beat out a poor email list of 100000. There’s lots of factors at play, but in general the more the better. Thus if you grow your list that should mean you will grow your income.

Control vs. No Control

How in control of the offer process are you? When it comes to email you have lots of control. You decide what to write about and what to offer. This may be a new product of your own. It could be a discount or sale. And it can be an affiliate offer. All of these can be great offers.

What is out of your control? People coming to your site from the search engines or reading a guest article your wrote elsewhere. If you have big enough numbers you will have reliable traffic from these sources but if you don’t, it is exactly that, unreliable.

What else is within your control? Paid advertising can be if you set it up right. Once you have your conversions and traffic sources down this can be very tightly control and you will know if you spend X dollars you get back XX dollars.

Jon, I’d look at what you did last month that worked so well. Was it all up to chance? If that’s the case then sometimes you have good luck and sometimes you won’t. But if there was something you specifically did that worked well then replicate that success.

Two Methods of Reliable Income…

To sum it up there are two main things.

1) Seek greater control

If you can reliably control the number of eyes that see your offers then you will have more reliable income.

You have lots of control with an email list and what offers you put out to it. If you want reliable income the email list will lead to it. In addition you need to have a regular format or schedule of making offers so that it is reliable.

Setting up sales funnels and advertising is another method. Both of these go hand in hand, because the advertising should be growing your email list.

2) Setup autopilot income

All of the above is good but it still means regular work. If you’re email out every day on new offers that will take some time. So what can be done to automate the process? Build systems that do the work for you.

Note that some systems are more autopilot then others.

Do you have an email sequence and offer that works? Put those messages into your autoresponder and let them work for you over and over again. That means every new person that joins your email list gets to see your best promotions. If you do this right it is a money machine.

This can be put into action in several ways. It doesn’t even have to be your autoresponder if you have a good affiliate willing to promote you in this manner over and over again.

The membership model or other form of continuity is probably the best method of making a reliable income. With people signed up to be billed every month you know exactly what is coming in month to month from this service.

But I’m not going to lie to you and say its easy. I’ve had several continuity programs over the years. If you don’t do it right it can be lots of work without a big payoff. But I’m about to launch a new program and I’ll update you on how that goes in the near future.

Another method is offer someone else’s continuity if they offer your recurring commissions for it. This can be low effort and big payoff!

Although there is no continuity built into Amazon and you don’t have much control yourself, with Amazon you’re playing with such big numbers that things tend to even out especially if you have more than one thing listed. Thus the 100% autopilot income I pull from Amazon is fairly consistent.

On my website I’ve updated you how things are going over time. I’ll do a new article on the topic coming up soon with new updates and changes to how it works.

You can find out all about how I do it in my Amazon course here.

There’s certainly more but this is more than enough to set you on the path. This was quite the comprehensive post going over lots of potential and real ways to build a steady and reliable income from your online business. If you have questions on the specifics be sure to ask in the comments below.

5 Fastest Info Product Creation Ideas

If you’re in the information marketing business, then it’s likely you’ll be coming up with lots of products over the years that you engage in this business. More likely than not your first product is going to take quite some time to do. That seems it be the case for just about everyone. My first product took about six months. I have some friends that took over two years to get their product released, and it finally just happened.

But as you continue in this business and create more products you’ll find you become faster and faster. Still there are some shortcuts you can take to speed up this process no matter if you’re starting out or a seasoned pro. This article will introduce you to five fast info product creation ideas that you can start putting into use right away.

I like video for several reasons. One of which is that video has a higher perceived value than books do in many cases. This is also because a large portion of the population is visually oriented, partially because they’re trained by their TV’s, YouTube and movies to enjoy watching something on the screen.

Video is also easy to put together. The way I like to do it is mind map the topic you’d like to film on. If you’re an expert in the subject then by doing this process you’ll have your complete outline. Then you shoot the video. Depending on your expertise you may need to do lots of takes, or you may be able to get through it with minimal editing, or even just one single take. As I mentioned before the more you do this the better you’ll get at it.

By presenting in this way, and by that I mean a live action video were you’re on it, you can quickly put together high-quality video with great information.

You don’t need expensive equipment or a film crew to do video these days.

A workshop can be an extension of the video model already discussed. Probably the greatest factor about this product creation idea, is that you can get paid to create the product. You sell the workshop in which you’re going to present great information and people sign up. Then when you put on the workshop you have the cameras rolling. That video is taken and put together in some format to create a product.

Another advantage of this is because workshops tend to be at the very least a half day, but often go into multiple days, you’re putting together a larger product. If each DVD is an hour-long after a weekend course you can often have somewhere between 12 and 18 DVDs. This means it’s going to be a higher priced and higher valued course.

In fact, I’m doing just that this weekend. I’m putting on the Wizards of Strength workshop. In this a few friends of mine/co-presenters and I are discussing the topic of strength training and fitness, with a large part of it being on the mental and energetic side of that training. It should be a great time.

Once the workshop is done we then have a decision to make. On the one hand we may just sell the workshop as is the complete set. For this workshop I think this may be the best way to deliver it. Or what we can do, and this is something we’ve done in our previous workshops, is to then split up the workshop segments into different products. At this point I’m not sure which direction we will take, but either way were going to make much more money from the video of this workshop then we made on the front-end filling it up with people.

For these reasons this is probably my most favorite product creation idea available. Anytime you can get paid to create something you’ll then sell, you should be happy about it.

Business Workshop Pic

My first business workshop, which I filmed and turned into a product.

Interviews are one the easiest ways to take the expert knowledge of one person and put it out there. The problem today, is that with all the podcasts and other free interviews available, it’s become harder to sell these, at least as a standalone product.

One model that is still successful is the Tele-summit model. In this usually somewhere between 10 and 20 experts are brought on during a period of around a week, to talk about one specific subject. Each expert talks about one specific aspect of the subject or his or her own take on it. Usually people are allowed to listen to these calls for free, or even the replays for a limited time. But if they want the MP3s or CDs of the entire summit usually they can get it for a fee. Because people are busy, if they want the information enough they’ll pay this fee. And sometimes other bonuses are stacked on like the transcripts of these interviews.

Another way to make interviews work is to have someone interview you. You can even write out the questions for them to ask of you. But with this it’s easier to speak than the talk for most people. And if you record six hours you can then have a six CD course (or MP3’s). If it’s great information people will pay for it.

Most interviews aren’t even done in person anymore. There are plenty of great online services to record over the phone or web.

This is related to the interview model but it is done completely by yourself. You can record yourself on a voice recorder or software on your computer, and then send it to a transcriptionist.

Another method is to get something along the lines of Dragon Naturally Speaking which automatically transcribes everything that you speak into it. In fact, I’m using that software which I just recently purchased, to do this article for you here. I also used this a few days ago to record a new book for release on Kindle. I was able to get through the book quicker than I would have typing it from scratch.

If you speak better than you write, or you just hate staring at a blank screen of white paper, then I recommend you give this option a try. There’s a learning curve to it, but I feel like this will be a key to speeding up my productivity in the long term.

Other People’s Products

While this isn’t actually a product creation idea, it may help you to think outside the box. Most likely in your nets, there are many other people with great products. Why go through the trouble of creating your own, when you can just offer theirs. This can be set up as a joint venture, or even just with affiliate sales. The end result of an offer that you make money on is the same whether it’s your own product or another person’s product. Of course that’s assuming you get the same profit or commission out of it, and not counting things like customer support or building a list or other important stuff like that.

Another way you can use other people’s products are as a model for your own. I’m not saying that you should steal their ideas, and definitely not to plagiarize their exact words. But if you look at one or more products of other people in the market you may use this as an outline for your own. You can also add other things like what did they miss? What are they wrong about? What connections from other related areas can you bring to this topic? By going through this process you can often put together a superior product.

Public Domain

I’ve written about public domain previously on this website. The truth is this is probably the fastest product creation method available. Why is that? Because the product is already 100% done. You can use it as is if you choose.

You can also edit make changes or derivative works from this product. Even though this may take time, because most of the work is already done, it’s still much faster then beginning from scratch. If you want more ideas on public domain click here.

Public Domain Book

Some little modifications (like new artwork) but a great book done and selling.

So there you have it, five fast info product creation ideas. And since there is multiple ideas and some of those, you certainly have more than five. Start putting these into action, and your online info business will grow faster and faster.

If you’d like help putting together any of these methods and a whole bunch more than be sure to check out my business coaching options available here.
